Painted freely, shaped by fire, and never exactly repeated.
Each Orange Tulip Mug is painted entirely freehand by a Chinese painting artist, without a preliminary sketch or traced pattern, then high-fired at approximately 1325°C (2417°F). At this temperature, both the painted surface and the ceramic form undergo significant transformation, making the final result impossible to reproduce exactly.
Rather than following a fixed design, the artist allows the tulips, leaves, brushstrokes, and composition to develop naturally across the surface of each mug. Some tulips appear delicate and fluid, while others carry deeper color and more expressive brushwork. Flower placement, orange tones, and the movement of the leaves naturally vary from one piece to another.
Painting on ceramic brings another element of unpredictability: the final colors are only fully revealed after firing. Subtle washes may emerge softly, while stronger brushstrokes can develop greater depth and intensity. Pigment, glaze, grey stoneware clay, and heat interact differently with every firing.
The process is demanding. Some pieces may deform in the kiln, while others simply do not achieve the balance of form, color, and painted expression we look for. In recent firings, fewer than 20% of the pieces have been selected for the finished collection.
Each finished mug is therefore not a copy of a master design, but an individual interpretation of the same quiet theme: orange tulips, painted by hand and transformed by fire.
